Women Rights and Movements
Women should be creating groups and movements to help regulate laws and rights for women.
Women are protesting for their rights in 1969, wanting to be treated equal, not as wives. Women are starting
to stand up for what they believe. Also ask for equality.

Progressive Era
US as a World Power
Women were outsiders to the
political life – voting, serving on juries and holding elective office.
Subjected to discrimination and were known as secondary citizens. Women are
deeply divided into race, class, religion, and ethnicity. Women in the 1900s
had very few rights, married women had no separate identity from her husband, and
she had no right to be sued or sue since she had no separate standing in court.
They also had no right to own any property in her name or to create a career of
her choice. Women could not vote, serve on juries or hold any office. According
to Supreme Court they were not “persons”.

World War I
Many women supported the war
effort. They contributed to the pre-war reform, club movement, settlement house
movement, and the suffrage movement which sold war bonds and saved food. Women
also sent relief supplies. During the war many women went into the work force
as navy and marines and thousands went into nursing. The home front women
worked in factories and in government. Women working in the work force
increased support for women suffrage, adding up to the 19th
amendment passing.

Roaring 20’s
Great Depression and New
Deal
Typical women had husbands that
were still employed; often many had a paycheck cut to keep the job, the family
had enough resources to rely on without going to relief or losing all of their
possessions if he lost his job. Many families income was $1160 a year which averaged
out to $20-25 a week. This covered monthly expenses such as food, clothing,
shelter and a occasional trip to the movies. Many women made it work by buying day
old bread or warming dishes in the oven to save gas. When men lost their jobs
women struggled to make ends meet, while men felt like failures because they couldn’t
take care of their families. Every family had a suffered through the depression
differently.

"Women will not simply be mainstreamed into the polluted stream. Women are changing the stream, making it clean and green and safe for all -- every gender, race, creed, sexual orientation, age, and ability." States Bella Abzug,
This quote states, that women are no longer going to take the second hand, or be considered a secondary citizen. Many groups have been created to protest women rights. Many women are now going to college and gaining a career, many are also speaking up for themselves and others. Even though we are not quite equal, we have come a long way and will only continue develop more rights.
