The Movement Begins

Montgomery Bus Boycott 1955-1956- Rosa Parks refused on
Dec. 1, 1955, to give up her bus seat so that a white man could sit. She was unaware that she started a black revolt across the nation. That changed the discrimination on buses forever. |
Brown Vs. Board of Education- In 1954 Linda Brown was denied admission to a school in Topeka, Kansas. Because of her race, she was told to attend an all-black school across town. Her parents and the NAACP sued the Topeka school board. On May 17, 1954 the supreme court ruled that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional.

The Roaring 20s
In the 1920s one million African American farm workers lost their jobs. The only jobs they could get in the city were jobs that required hardly any skill, and were extremely low paying. Along with trying to get employed, many segregated communities in the city were overpopulated. Despite these challenges African Americans were also making great strides to improve their life style. For example, Marcus Garvey encouraged racial pride throughout African American community. Black Artists, writers, and musicians were also able to express themselves and their feelings, and were liked by the majority of the American Public. African Americans, using their talents, challenged racial stereotypes to help with racial segregation.

The Great Depression
Word War I
During World War I, about 500,000 blacks headed up north. Heading to cities like Chicago or New York. When the war broke out the African Americans saw that as an opportunity to prove their loyalty to the country. The draft said they wanted "100% Americanism", so some African Americans felt hesitant to join. However Black political leaders believed that if the race sacrificed for the war effort, the government would have no choice to reward them with more Civil Rights.

Significance
In 1909 the NAACP was established to fight for African American rights. Now 105 years later, we have a black
president running our country. Barack Obama is the first African American to hold office. He has been fighting
for our country to the best of his ability for six years. All the rights that the African Americans worked for in the 1900’s has paid off. Barack Obama is a perfect example of how hard work is worth it.
